A physicist creates enthusiasm for science!
Stimulating interest and arousing curiosity in scientific and technical disciplines is the main mission of the Espace des inventions in Lausanne. This interactive museum has been run for over 20 years by Emmanuelle Giacometti, a physicist by training...

Around 30,000 people visit the Espace des inventions every year, many of them schoolchildren. The museum presents themes covering the whole spectrum of natural and technical sciences through temporary exhibitions. In 2011, the museum was awarded the 'Prix Expo of SCNAT' for its exhibition 'Fingers in the Brain' (Les doigts dans le cerveau).
Since its creation in 2000, the director of the Espace des inventions has been Emmanuelle Giacometti. Originally from Geneva, Emmanuelle Giacometti studied physics at the Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, where she also wrote her doctoral thesis on the mechanical properties of an aluminum-copper-iron intermetallic alloy.
The scientist then turned to scientific mediation. The new 'Espace des inventions' was the place where she was able to develop this passion by exploring scientific mediation and its various forms. To prepare for this new challenge, she took further training in museology and cultural mediation at the University of Lausanne.
"I'm looking to explore all possible ways of awakening the curiosity of children and the general public in scientific knowledge, and to encourage everyone to develop a critical and open mind", says Emmanuelle Giacometti. She lives with her partner and three children in Lavigny, in the canton of Vaud.
