The platform MAP incorporates societies and scientifique bodies dedicated to the areas of mathematics, astronomy and physics. It supports the organisations’ activities and coordinates and promotes research and education in the field of mathematics, astronomy and physics.

IMU is an international non-governmental and non-profit scientific organization, with the purpose of promoting international cooperation in mathematics. It is a member of the International Science Council (ISC). IMU endorses ISC's Principle of Freedom, Responsibility and Universality of Science.

The Swiss Mathematical Society (SMG) has been entrusted by the Platform Mathematics, Astronomy and Physics (MAP) with the task of being the national contact point to the IMU.

It thus assumes the tasks of a national committee of the SCNAT.
