The International Day of Light 2022 on May 16 falls on a Monday. The organizing committee is now welcoming registration of events, for the entire week of 16-21 May. Of course, they remain flexible, and events celebrating light at all other times of the year can also be recognized as part of the International Day of Light.
Many events will likely be organized using online and hybrid formats.

The Year 2022 also celebrates two exciting United Nations International Years, on the themes of ‘Basic Sciences for Sustainable Development,’ and ‘Glass’. Both link closely to the objectives of the International Day of Light.

The International Day of Light is a global initiative that provides an annual focal point for the continued appreciation of light and the role it plays in science, culture and art, education, and sustainable development, and in fields as diverse as medicine, communications, and energy. It is administered from the international Basic Science Programme of UNESCO.
The International Day of Light will be held on May 16th every year, the anniversary of the first successful operation of the laser in 1960 by physicist and engineer, Theodore Maiman. The laser is a perfect example of how a scientific discovery can yield revolutionary benefits to society in communications, healthcare and many other fields.
