In November 1922, it was announced that Einstein would receive the Nobel Prize for the year 1921. Namely "for his services in theoretical physics, and in particular for his discovery of the law of the photoelectric effect". The symposium first recalls the historical background and then presents modern developments in photonics.

In the statement of reasons for Albert Einstein receiving the Nobel Prize, there is interestingly no mention of the two theories of relativity; the main reason for the honour is Einstein's explanation of the photoelectric effect in 1905. It took more than 10 years to confirm his bold hypotheses experimentally. Einstein was unable to come to Stockholm for the award ceremony and only received the prize in July 1923 at a meeting of Scandinavian natural scientists in Gothenburg.
