The Phi-Lab at the European Space Deep-Tech Innovation Centre (ESDI) is dedicated to turning scientific breakthroughs into real-world solutions. Their first call for proposals aims to make quantum sensors more adaptable for space travel—and it's now open!

Applicants can receive funding between 200,000 and 990,000 CHF for a 24-month project, along with expert guidance.

The Challenge:

What if every satellite could carry a quantum sensor the size of a shoebox?

Quantum sensors offer unparalleled precision in detecting gravity, magnetic fields, and time. However, most remain confined to laboratories, limiting quantum sensing from addressing urgent commercial and societal needs such as water management, infrastructure monitoring, and navigation.

Your Mission:

Help bridge the gap between lab technology and space-ready applications by achieving at least a 10x improvement in size, performance, or reliability of quantum sensors.

Key goals:

  • Control system miniaturization, all the way to chip-scale
  • Environmental resilience, including thermal and vibration management
  • Sensor integration, such as by combining multiple quantum sensing modalities
  • Scalable production methods suitable for commercial manufacturing
