In the live show Emergence, Professor Brian Cox of the University of Manchester explores how complex structures in nature arise from simple physical principles. He combines visually compelling insights from physics, biology, and cosmology.

Emergence builds on Brian Cox’s previous programme Horizons, which reached a large international audience. Cox has been well known for many years through numerous science programmes on BBC radio and television, including Wonders of the Solar System and The Planets.

At the heart of the new show is the question of how complex structures in the universe emerge. The starting point is an observation made by Johannes Kepler in 1610 about the hexagonal shape of snowflakes. Today, we know that this phenomenon can be explained by the properties of water molecules and the fundamental laws of physics. The show takes up these connections and places them in a broader context, ranging from subatomic and biological systems to large-scale cosmic structures.

The production uses extensive visual and audio elements to make scientific content accessible to a broad audience.
